What is identity theft?
Identity theft refers to all types of crime in which someone wrongfully obtains and uses another person’s personal data in some way that involves fraud or deception, typically for economic gain.

Who are the victims of identity theft?
Identity theft does not discriminate; it affects all ages, genders and economic classes. Anyone can be the victim of identity theft. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) estimates about 9 million Americans are victims of identity theft each year. Most commonly, the victim knows the thief, who uses their relationship for access to the personal information. Such criminals are usually friends, neighbors, relatives, work colleagues, or people employed or providing services in private homes. Even in this digital age, the most common source of personal information is still from a misplaced or stolen purse or wallet. However, an identity thief may be a stranger, and the source of the misappropriated personal information can be an electronic or written source.

How can I protect myself from identity theft?

  1. Stay informed. The best thing anyone can do is to monitor their credit report through the credit bureaus and be aware of account activity on credit cards and bank accounts.
  2. Protect your information. Do not give others access to your personal information. Keep important documents such as social security numbers and birth certificates in a secure place. Never write down pin numbers or personal access codes for accounts.

What can I do if I am a victim of Identity theft?

  1. Call the credit bureaus and have them put a temporary freeze on your accounts. Once this is done, anytime a credit granting agency wishes to open a new account they will have to contact you first. A temporary freeze usually lasts about 90 days.
  2. Get a lawyer. It is important that you start the process of resolving your identity theft issues as soon as possible. The longer you wait the harder it will be to repair the damage done.

Why do I need a lawyer?
Repairing the damage done by an identity theft can be costly and frustrating if you do not have access to the right resources. The Maryland Attorney Generals office reports that on average a victim of identity theft spends at least 30 hours and more than $500.00 trying to resolve the problems associated with identity theft.
